Golden Eagle In Flight

Me and my shadow in the snow.

A short post today. I’m preparing for a scary dental appointment early this morning.

1/6400, f/6.3, ISO 800, Canon R5, Canon EF500mm f/4L IS II USM + 1.4 tc, not baited, set up or called in

Yes, this is the same Golden Eagle I posted photos of yesterday. But she’s on a different flight, in a different area of the red cliffs and she’s flying in the opposite direction. The photo was taken four days ago and not long after sunrise (7:19 AM, sunrise was at 6:46) so the light is very warm.

I got quite a few photos of ‘her’ on this flight but I thought this one was the most interesting. I like her shadow on the snow and her placement in the image relative to the crisp dividing line between the snow and the vertical cliff directly behind her. For me her flight posture also adds to the appeal of the image. The fact that she’s a Golden Eagle certainly doesn’t hurt.

She could be just a little sharper but considering how close she is to the cliff behind her I won’t complain about it. Not much anyway.

  1. Your Golden is golden, especially with the very complementary colors of the cliff behind her. The shadow play is neat, too!
Glad you got through your dental appt. — the older I get, the less I like them, and I haven’t even had any major issues yet! 🙄
You must be getting the rain we had yesterday (2” in 24 hrs) — and it’s still raining (lightly) here! I’m pretty done with it already.

  2. So cool. Besides the snow shadow, I love how the bush branches and fractures and layers in the background rocks interact with the golden eagle – the branch that parallels the wing front, the crack that splits the wings, the 4 overlapping rock layers left of its head that amplify it shape, the brown rocks on the far right that resemble the tail. Wow.

All dental appointments are scary to me, even the most mundane, so I understand your fear. Really enjoying so many photos of golden eagles. I have not seen all that many in my life, and these are lovely shots. Thanks, Ron, and hope you have a better morning than you might imagine. Take care.

    • Ellen, northern Utah has a lot of Golden Eagle habitat and a fair number of eagles but even when their numbers are good there aren’t all that many of them. The last few years of drought have taken a significant toll on them so every sighting I have is special.

Great shot Ron. Always good to see a Golden in flight.
Good luck with the scary dental procedure – I have had a few of those.

  5. Both yesterday and today you posted photos in which the shadow of the
bird played a stunning part in the power of the image– today, even the color of the shadow –quite blue–is a wonderful contrast to the deep yellow ochre
of the cliffs above–wowser ! As for your appointment– I hope you can focus
mentally on today’s image and mentally “be the eagle”…….

  6. NICE! Beautiful bird in a beautiful setting. Everything came through fine – net is VERY slow this morning for some reason.

4 to 5″ of heavy wet snow and still snowing – YES! Glad the trees aren’t leafed out yet tho notice a bit is accumulating on the power lines – not an issue yet as they still have good distance between them BUT!

    Good luck at the dentist!

  7. Whole lotta golden goin’ on. The snow bird is a nice touch.
What I spent at the dentist last year would have paid for an R5 and then some. I wish you well.

  8. What a beautiful and magical photo! You are an artist.
    Take Care,
    Kaye

    • Much appreciated, Kaye.

    • It is a perfect photo! After all, it is a golden eagle!! Thank you for sharing.
Coming from a former dental assistant of many years I can say let’s be thankful we HAVE dentists; or you would really be up a creek. And, yes, dentistry is expensive as is their continuing education, updating ever-improving technology for the patient and materials, overhead, even sterilization just between patients to keep you safe. It’s your health, after all. Your mouth can tell a dentist a lot about your overall health. What isn’t expensive these days anyway!

  9. Great shot! Love the subject and the contrasts. Beautiful.

  10. Great shot, Ron! I love the contrast between the eagle and the cliff and the shadow and the snow! You will be in my thoughts this morning. I hope all goes smoothly at the dentist office.

  11. The photo is not showing up for me!!!

That is a remarkable shot. Much appreciate your artistic eye and talent in curating. Keeps me coming back for more.

Traveling this week. In Flagstaff AZ and then onto Santa Fe NM. Must have snowed a lot here in the past weeks. Still lots of it on the ground. The rain is dissolving it here too.

Re the dentist. Right there with you. Spent a lot of time in the chair in the past 8 months for some major work. Hate every one of those visits. Courage my friend!
