Amaranth Seeds Have Been Mailed

Along with something much more important.

Three weeks ago I offered to send amaranth seeds to as many readers as wanted them, until I ran out of seeds. The first time I offered the seeds only one reader, Judy Gusick, took me up on it so I expected there wouldn’t be much interest in them. I was surprised when I was flooded with requests within just a couple of hours of publishing that post.

At that point I knew that more readers were interested than I had seeds to share so I stopped sending out my mailing address after I got the first 17 requests (without my mailing address readers couldn’t send me their SASE, so at least I saved those folks a stamp). I also gave seeds personally to several locals who requested them.

Because of my surgery recovery I’ve been slow in sending out the seeds but yesterday, after finally deciding I had no choice but to begin taking some of my opiate pain pills, I felt well enough to get it done.

So they’re now on their way to the first 17 readers who sent me their requests (the seeds were mailed just before noon yesterday). Many of you included thoughtful notes and/or cards with your SASE, which I appreciate very much. Thank you.

The yellow envelope was mailed in the same batch as the seeds.

It’s my election ballot.

Please don’t forget to vote. Our children, our grandchildren and the planet we call home are in desperate need of all the help they can get.

Ron

  1. I haven’t missed an election (even the special ones) since I turned 18. Voting is so important and I don’t understand why so many people don’t vote.

Be gentle with yourself and take the pain pills if you have to. I agree with Theresa — see how you feel after taking the pills. 💜

  2. Be careful if taking Torodol. Don’t hurt no more, until it demands more.

  3. You are (as my father said of me) more stubborn than stains. I am glad that you gave in and took the opiates, while being very sad that your pain made it necessary. They have their place.
And thank you for mailing those seeds.

  4. I agree with what Theresa, Judy, and others have said about opiates: they have their downsides, but are critical in relieving pain. And the stress of being IN pain. All your muscles, your breathing, etc. tense up when you have pain and that is not conducive to healing. You’ve heard all this. Take care, and thanks for the important reminder to vote!

Funny post this morning Ron. A definite departure from the normal. Hope you are getting lots of rest and are recuperating at the pace your doctors are hoping for. Very nice of you to offer those seeds and then to follow up and take the time to send them all out. You are one of the good guys.

  6. Agree pain medication has its place – use accordingly 😄 And the popularity of the amaranth seeds is most likely due to the wonderful photos you posted with your backyard birds enjoying those seeds amongst the glorious color of the bushes. Be kind to yourself please 🤗

  7. I always vote, too, although I’ve no doubt any more that those seeds will yield better results than any election. I planted my garlic yesterday. It felt more meaningful than will mailing in my ballot.

  8. Thanks for encouraging voting– I can’t think of a year within my long lifetime
that voting has been more critically important. I hope I’m one of the lucky
recipients of amaranth seeds ! It snowed down south here, so it’ll be a bit before they’ll go into the ground. I’m sorry you’re having a lot of pain. What
Judy says–those injured nerve-endings are coming back to life, and because they’re beginning to heal, are now able to complain MIGHTILY about their
ill-treatment….I hope that part will be over with soon

    • Kris, if memory serves I believe that you are one of the “lucky ones”. Surprisingly, many of the first 17 requests I got were from folks who follow my blog but have never commented. I’d never heard of some of them before.

  9. Opiates can certainly be a problem, BUT they have their place and work best if taken before pain is intolerable…….. Sounds like some nerves may be coming back to life after checking out for awhile and complaining mightily – a good news/bad news thing. Hopefully things will improve some shortly…….

Seeds are safely stored for spring tho may put a few out when this round of wet weather eases up – THX! 🙂

Ballots are “in process” here still needing a bit more info in a couple of cases. They WILL be mailed shortly…..

Heavy wet snow/rain this morning not a ton of depth BUT – trees/shrubs with leaves still on leaning – spring us more likely to get us that way than fall. We’ll take it!

  10. Thanks for sending the seeds especially when you’re feeling so lousy. In 30 years as a physical therapist specializing in adults over 70, here’s my take on the opiates. Notice how they make you feel. Is it pain relief and human – or euphoric, “up”, ten feet tall and bulletproof (a lot of people have that experience with steroids, too.) That’s a useful window into whether you’re at risk of misuse, or not. Taking pain medication helps you keep moving, and that’s critical to healing. Move a little bit, a lot of times. Short walks, often. Look at that X ray – you had a lot of work done. Be kind to yourself.
