Feathered Photography Is Taking An Involuntary Break

You might be able to guess why.

In recent days my chronic bad back has taken a turn for the worse. Much worse. The pain is intense and constant, no matter what I’m doing or not doing. Nerve pain is no fun.

I have an appointment with my surgeon later this morning and surgery is the most likely strategy for dealing with it. I won’t be posting again until I feel better than I do now. A lot better.

So like this magpie, I’m out’a here. But I plan to be back and I’ll miss my readers in the meantime.

Ron

  4. Best wishes for a speedy and successful recovery. Looking forward to your return to posting beautiful images!

  5. Been there, done that. Best of luck in getting over it.

  6. Wishing you the best Ron. My back is hurting also. If I take some prednisone it will really help. Better than surgery. Everyone I know who’s had back surgery has had to have more than one surgery with little relief. I hope you have much better results.
Will miss seeing your fantastic photos.

So sorry to hear this. Pain is horrible. Hope you feel relief soon.

  20. Good luck with the surgery and/or other alternatives. Betty fought back pain for years. Surgery, injections, the works. I am more than sympathetic with what you are experiencing. When you are able, think about giving your readers updates on your progress periodically. We will all be wondering about how you are doing.

  21. Jerzy P Komorowski

    Get well quick!

  22. Ron,
Was sad to hear of your pain and departure. I have sent many a bird watching photographer your way to learn, laugh and appreciate your posts. As with everyone else here’s hoping it’s a smooth and short recovery period!

    Permanently.

  26. You will feel better soon! Best wishes, Ron.

  27. Oh dear, I had hoped your back pain was behind you … …
Really, I’m so sorry it’s come to this, but it’s time to take care of it once and for all. Three epidurals and radio-frequency ablation did it for me several years ago. I hope relief will come quickly, with whatever procedure and/or medication(s) you ultimately choose. You will be missed, and in our thoughts! ♥️

  28. So sorry to hear about your back pain again. I hope all goes well. Both my parents are struggling with back pain. My mother had surgery to glue stress fractures and is doing better and my father is going the steroid shot route. I hope you can find some relief. Pain is never easy to live with.

I feel you. Back pain is the worst. A friend had back surgery recently. She had sciatica so badly she could barely walk. But I saw her just last week. She’s feeling MUCH better. I have faith that you will too. Love sent, professor.

  30. Best wishes for success and fingers crossed that this solves the problem and your recovery is swift and uneventful!

  31. Trudy Jean Brooks

  33. Oh gosh! I am so very sorry about the back pain!

If all of our wishes do indeed carry the kind of energetic “weight” that we all carry for you and for love of your work, you will indeed get great care, be freed from pain and be back here regaling us with your outstanding photos in the not-too-distant future! Sending lots and lots of healing energy!

  34. Wishing you a good outcome with the back. Like many others, I’ll certainly miss your wonderful blog. Take care.

  35. I wish you well and a complete and quick recovery.

    Take Care,
    Kaye

  36. I will sorely miss starting my computer day seeing your wonderful photos and stories. I wish it was because you were taking a far-off photo safari rather than suffering “the pains and arrows of outrageous fortune.” Back surgeries and pain haunted my mom and now my wife. It was wonderful when medical solutions lessened their sharp hurt and they resumed doing things they loved. Joining all other readers, I hope and wish what you do the same. Take care.

  37. God speed Ron. My mom lived with nerve pain from a back injury her entire adult life. Don’t wish that on anyone (ok maybe that ahole Putin). Sending you warm thoughts and prayers for a speedy and permanent solution/recovery. 🙂

That is such a colorful magpie shot!! The iridescence on the tail feathers is captivating!

  38. Good luck and best wishes for pain relief and a good fix to the problem. We’ll miss your amazing and wonderful posts. 🌺

  39. Healing thoughts & prayers I feel your pain!
    Theresa

  40. Ron, I wish you a speedy recovery in dealing with the pain. I hope the surgery (or whatever chosen treatment) is highly successful. You give your followers so much, and you deserve the very best!

  41. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Ron! I’ll miss your new posts but your health comes first and foremost.

  42. Michael McNamara

Did not know you had back issues Ron. My thoughts and prayers for your rapid relief from this affliction. I have such empathy, as my 22 year old daughter just went through a spine surgery to alleviate neuro-symptoms from a ruptured disk from an auto accident. Things are going well for her, as I hope they do for you.

Looking forward to your recovery from this suffering, and the resumption of your daily posts. May the happiness you bring to your Feathered Photography Followers be returned to you tenfold.

  43. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery Ron!

  44. Jorge Horácio Oliveira

I hope that everything goes for the best and that the recovery is quick and smooth.

  45. Nicole Haller-Wilson

    Nerve pain is absolutely 🔥🔥🔥

I am so sorry you’re experiencing this and I hope that surgery fixes it and that you’re feeling better as soon as possible.

Many thanks as always for the outstanding/stunning/exquisite photos

  46. I wish you a full and speedy recovery Ron. Hope to see you in the field soon. Update on the Osprey I photographed with the band 2R. It was banded in 2019 in Dixon Montana!

  47. Soldier on, pal. You are in our thoughts!

  48. That is a rocking Rocket Magpie… sending all the good karma I have available your way. Best wishes for a semi speedy and complete recovery.

  49. Just scanned thru all of the well-wishes in your comment section. If even
just half of all that love and respect can make it through the cloud of pain
you’re experiencing, it’ll bring you at least some psychic comfort! Like everyone else,
I’m hoping your medical team will find something for physical relief , and FAST.

  50. So sorry to hear that you are in such pain. Hoping you get relief soon!

  51. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. I will miss my favorite blog. Hurry back!

  52. Best of luck, may you be out of pain soon!

  53. So sorry to hear this Ron. I’ve done spinal injections, PT, chiropractic and massage, but when the pain is at its worst, I’ve always found some level of relief by hitting the pool. Grab that trusty pool noodle (I know you have one!) and get in and float! Thinking good thoughts for a quick recovery.

  54. I hope your surgery and recovery go well, Ron. I am sorry you are going through so much pain.

  55. Everett F Sanborn

Excellent out’a here Magpie photo. Take care Ron. Best wishes for successful surgery or whatever turns out to be best. Gerry’s response is so true, that equipment does take a toll on the back.

  56. I guess misery loves company. I have an appointment next week for same. We could compare notes later but that might put off fans of FP. I’d also offer to submit photos to post on FP but that would give everyone a royal pain inferior to the spinal column. In any case, infinite wishes for a pain-free outcome.

  57. Nerve pain is NO fun, been there! My prayers and good thoughts are with you!

  58. Mary Walton Mayshark-Stavely

Bon courage and I’ll be sending healing thoughts! Best wishes to you…as I write a fat Robin sits on the railing near the window…waving its wing!! II’ll be thinking of you and realizing how much your posts mean. Thank you so much and let me know if there is any way I can help from far away.

  59. DAMN! Hate that it’s come to this – sure hope surgery/whatever provides some long term relief. You’ll be in my thoughts…..

  60. Cindy S Intravartolo

Ron, best of luck to you. Don’t worry, we will be here when you return.

  61. Oh Ron, so sorry. I will be Interested in how this goes for you. I have had steadily worsening spinal stenosis for years and I understand the pain and nerve pain you describe.I wish you well and hope you have the best possible outcome.

  62. So sorry to hear that you are in pain, Ron. Best of luck with the surgery and a speedy recovery! Fingers crossed! I’ll sure miss your daily posts and look forward to have you back soon.

  63. Feel better and may you be “back” soon!
I’ve been having back pain for years, and I’m finally going to try physical therapy — after chiropractic, (my go to for it for decades), massage, yoga, and stubborn determination have failed. Found a direct pay PT group that works one on one.

  64. Sad to hear that your condition has taken such a bad turn. Hoping that treatment will be entirely successful in believing your pain and limitations.

  65. Ron, I’m sorry to hear about your back pain and hope the surgery (if you have it) goes smoothly and that you have a fast and full recovery. Cheers!

  66. Ron, I’m so sorry to hear of your travails. I know a little of how you are feeling – a sciatic nerve pinch a few years back – but nothing like you must be feeling now. I do hope your physicians will be able to alleviate at least some if not all of your pains.

Hang in there, and get back to your joy of photography soon. I’ll be waiting.

  67. Ron, may you heal quickly, and be with the birds again soon!

  68. Ron, I’m so sorry you’re having this difficult time. I am grateful for your blog. May the wind be at your back and the surgeon skilled!

  69. Ron You, your posts and photos will be missed. I’ll be impatiently waiting for your return.

  70. Ron,

    1. You have all your blog-followers (and more) rooting for relief of your terrible back pain ASAP.

    2. We will all be able to use the time of your involuntary absence to read blogs we’vemissed, re-visit astounding photos in the blogs, and watch birds.. We are well taken care of by you in your involuntary absence.

    .

    • Chronic pain is so debilitating. I’m sorry that you are experiencing it full blown. I will really miss your daily posts but it’s much more important that you find some relief. Best of luck with the surgery and finding pain reduction.

  71. Good luck Ron. I sure hope it turns out for the best.

  72. I’m sorry Ronnie! I hope you get some relief soon!

  73. So sorry to hear Ron. Best wishes for an effective resolution, a speedy recovery and no more pain.

  74. Wishing you the best Ron. I know what you’re going through after two back surgeries of my own. Heavy cameras, lenses and tripods take a toll on photographers. It’s the essence of being photographers. You’ll be back and feeling much better before you know it. Best.

  75. We’re here for you, Ron. You have my number, please don’t be shy to give me a call or text. Happy to help with anything! Meals, trips the stores, anything.

  76. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you.
    Stay strong

  77. I’ve had a recent spinal cortisone injection, works wonders! and a friend had the Vertiflex procedure which she says is very effective so far, google it, which I will try once the cortisone isn’t effective. Voltaren is an excellent temporary measure especially in the morning. Good luck! Old age isn’t for sissies!

  78. Thank goodness for your archives! Best wishes for a complete and quick recovery. We’ll be thinking of you.
