Prior to this bird a week ago today I’d never had such a prolonged session with a preening kingfisher up close.

I can often thank the uropygial gland of birds for providing me with some interesting poses.

There’s more to preening and grooming than just repairing damaged feathers.

Chukar pair bonds are forming now and I believe these two birds to be a mated pair.

Though I regularly watch birds as they preen it’s not often that I’m able to actually see the preen (uropygial) gland.
