Yesterday I had a good morning in the mountains. I documented interesting behaviors from several species and I was even able to get a few photos I like.
American White Pelicans are a species I should train my lens on more often. While they’re sitting on the water they often don’t make a very interesting subject but getting that huge 16 lb. body airborne is a real struggle so photos of them taking off have much more interest for many of us.
Getting three takeoff shots in a series like this is pretty unusual for me, especially since I didn’t clip any body parts. Yesterday was mostly a good day at Bear River MBR but I saw some very disturbing conditions while I was there.
The American Bittern is solitary and cryptically colored. Throw in its secretive nature and inaccessible habitats and you have a species that I rarely see so getting photos of one taking off and in flight made my day yesterday.
If you’re getting tired of photos of the rufous red-tail please bear with me. These photos were taken yesterday morning and one of them is among my favorites.
