Lately I’ve been on a roll when it comes to photos of birds being attacked by other birds. Yesterday morning in the mountains the victim was once again a kingfisher but this time the image quality is very good.
Prior to this bird a week ago today I’d never had such a prolonged session with a preening kingfisher up close.
A subtle variation in head-shaking style between species that most bird lovers have probably noticed but I suspect few have given any thought to.
At least those youngsters on the Montana family farm like to wander but they’re always raised in the dark and confined interiors of old granaries. I’ve often wondered if GHO chicks raised in trees do the same thing at this tender age but I have little experience with that situation.
Some of my posts are heavy on words and light on photos. This one is just the opposite.
It’s often a fool’s errand to assign motivation to unexplained bird behaviors so in this case I won’t make any claims. But I have to wonder if this young owl might have been experimenting with its eyesight.
Finding nesting material and carrying it to the nest is only the beginning of the battle.
