Chicks this age always give me hope for the future. I guess I needed some reassurance after worrying about the late breeding pair of Western Grebes I photographed a few days ago.
I decided to post baby grebe hitchhikers this morning in the hope they will have a positive effect on my current funk. I suspect some of my readers could use a similar attitude adjustment.
Yesterday I had a meeting with the new manager of Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge regarding questions and concerns I had about recent management decisions affecting the refuge. Here’s what I found out.
With their eyes completely surrounded by white and an orange bill I think Clark’s Grebes have a slightly more elegant appearance than the nearly identical Western Grebe. But I love spending time with both species, especially when they’re back brooding chicks.
For a variety of reasons this might have been my most rewarding session ever with a family of Western Grebes and I actually had five of them to play with.
