Occasionally physical variations in birds cause me to do a double-take. That’s exactly what happened yesterday morning with a Great Horned Owl in Box Elder County and in this case it was because of the length of its ear tufts (“horns”).
The Rough-legged Hawk is our only buteo that exhibits true sexual dimorphism so adults can be sexed based on plumage.
Each of these photos has something just a little bit different about it, at least in my collection of Barn Owl images.
There’s many things I like about this shot and only one I don’t. A ratio that good doesn’t happen often enough with this bird photographer.
Kestrels are highly efficient and skillful at “de-hiding” their small mammal prey (and no, I don’t think this image is gory).
Or perhaps it was a threat posture. Or a combination of both. Either way I thought it was a little bizarre.
Plus another example proving beyond doubt that Utah state government has lost its collective mind!
Including an American Goldfinch, a Red-winged Blackbird and a Prairie Falcon in flight.
And speculation about the reason for an apparent recent decline in the Antelope Island coyote population.
For any who may be disturbed by the crassness of my title you have my permission to substitute mucus and saliva for the offending two words…
The seeds were still on the wild plants and they weren’t easy to reach which resulted in some fun photos.
The golds of fall come in many tones and shapes, just like the birds I often find surrounded by them.
