There are no easy answers for the dilemma of barbed wire and its effects on wildlife and even domestic animals, especially if you’re a farmer or rancher. But we can certainly improve our track record if we realize there’s a problem. A big one.

Two days ago I encountered this juvenile Red-tailed Hawk on an unlikely and extremely foul-smelling perch.
I’m unusually fond of this bird because it saved both my morning and my bacon after a particularly stupid mistake in my part a few minutes earlier.
A somewhat startling example of a problem many bird photographers, including yours truly, like to bitch about – the daunting challenge of exposing black and white birds properly.
Critters use sunflowers for a variety of reasons. They don’t have to be in bloom to be useful to birds and wildlife but when they are they sure brighten up some of my photos. When they aren’t they allow me to photograph feeding behavior like I did yesterday.
Let me be clear. I wasn’t angry at the cat. Instead I was angry at the people responsible for it being where it was. I still am.
A couple of recent emails from a former student truly made my day, despite the sad photos included in one of them.
