With Feathered Photography I face a dilemma when choosing pronouns referencing the sex of individual birds. In a recent comment a reader took exception to the way I handle it so I think it’s high time I explain why I deal with it the way I do. I’ve done it before in comments but never as the subject of a blog post.

I seldom see Pied-billed Grebes use this unique diving method but it always amuses me when I do. I’ve reported on this behavior before but those were different photos and this is a different grebe.

It’s been a while since I published a potpourri post so I figured it was about time. Each of the following 8 images was taken over the last 8 days in places like Bear River MBR, Antelope Island, Farmington Bay WMA or other favorite haunts of mine in northern Utah.
On only one occasion have I been able to include an entire family of 5 or more Western Grebes in the same tight photos.
With their eyes completely surrounded by white and an orange bill I think Clark’s Grebes have a slightly more elegant appearance than the nearly identical Western Grebe. But I love spending time with both species, especially when they’re back brooding chicks.
I like to challenge my photography skills and this is one of my favorite ways of doing it.
After this many years of observing birds carefully I seldom see behaviors that are new to me in common species. But 12 days ago I did.
I’ve photographed this feeding behavior before but those photos have never been this clear and detailed.
