In the past I’ve photographed many buteo species regurgitating pellets but until two days ago I’d never done it with a Ferruginous Hawk. And the aftermath of this event was entertaining for me and perhaps for the hawk too. I’d never seen it happen before and I have to wonder if the hawk had.
There’s several things about this image that appeal to me very much and one that doesn’t.

I took this shot nine years ago and never opened the image until last night (I’m probably going to catch hell from readers for that…). It had three surprises waiting for me when I finally saw it full screen.
I can often thank the uropygial gland of birds for providing me with some interesting poses.
For me at least Peregrine Falcons are usually unapproachable but occasionally when they’ve had prey I’ve been able to get close enough for quality photos. That’s why I appreciate the sacrifice of this American Coot.
At first I wasn’t sure why I like this shot as much as I do – after all it has at least two noticeable “flaws”.
