I fully expected to be skunked by the lack of birds or poor light or both but this trip to Antelope Island was a little better than I anticipated. We actually had good light until near the end of the morning and we found a few interesting critters.
These photos are the epitome of the bird photography style known as “bird on a stick”. But at least it’s a natural stick and he did “salute” me to make up for it.
In fact it’s one of the largest voles I’ve seen (don’t worry, there’s nothing graphic here).
I finally got reasonably close to a couple of kestrels yesterday morning at Farmington Bay.
I often pay nearly as much attention to my failed takeoff and flight shots as I do to my successes.
During hunting season you just never know what strange sights you might see at Farmington Bay.
Let me be clear. I wasn’t angry at the cat. Instead I was angry at the people responsible for it being where it was. I still am.
Just holding onto your lunch isn’t always easy when you’re 20′ in the air and the prey is relatively large.
With Feathered Photography I face a dilemma when choosing pronouns referencing the sex of individual birds. In a recent comment a reader took exception to the way I handle it so I think it’s high time I explain why I deal with it the way I do. I’ve done it before in comments but never as the subject of a blog post.
This male stretched every limb he possibly could simultaneously which I thought resulted in an awkward but endearing pose.
and so does the comedy of errors regarding my antibiotics. I deeply regret having to make a second post on this subject but it was either that or leave my readers in the dark about why I wasn’t posting today.
Raptors in particular are known for repeatedly using the same perch, sometimes over a period of years. And sometimes they’re used by more than one raptor species so it behooves the bird photographer to check them out regularly. If raptors like’m, I like’m – even when they’re less than photogenic.
It’s been a while since a kestrel allowed me a close approach so I appreciated the close action as this female enjoyed her furry breakfast on a great perch (photos are not gory).
