Chasing My Shadow

Just like this Horned Lark, that’s exactly what I’m doing on this trip to southern Utah so far – chasing my own shadow.

This is only a novelty shot but it fits my situation. I can’t access the Greater Sage Grouse lek because there’s too much snow in the high country, I’ve located a few Sandhill Cranes but I’m spinning my wheels with them for a variety of reasons and birds have generally been uncooperative when I could find them. So far I have shots of a red-tail on a pole and a kestrel on a wire. I consider that “skunked”.

And to top it all off internet access is virtually nonexistent. Time will tell if I can even post this.

Reaching for the deeply buried optimist in me I can only hope that both birds and technology will be more cooperative today.

We all get that 7 way from time to time,

  2. I get impatient when I am painting. I don’t enjoy the drawing part as much and I tend to rush the drawing. Drawing is the basis for a good painting. I have to remind myself to enjoy the process of the journey. I am getting better at it but I understand your impatience.

  3. You can only be chasing your own shadow if it’s befote noon and you’re heading west…or heading east in the after noon…..I’m confused!!!

  4. “Deeply buried optimist!” Made me smile.

  5. I know your picky self wanted more – but love, love, love the image you got. From my perspective skunked, shmunked.
And I do hope that you get more of what you hope for today.

  6. I feel your frustration. Been there too. Super pic today though. I appreciate the action shot.

  7. I love your butt shot of the Mini Great Horned Screech Owl Lark seeing its shadow…just can’t remember how many weeks until Spring it means though…sure hope it’s soon!!! Enjoy just being “away from it all”…suck up the scenery and let serendipity happen….. 😉

  8. Heeeere birdie birdie. Heeeere birdie!

  9. Awesome commentary as always, Ron. Great shot. IT would’ve worked well for my shadows week in the 52 week challenge. Hope you guys are having fun. I am jealous.

  10. Cool! 🙂 Good shot even if you feel skunked at the moment! Perhaps today will be better. Cabin Fever will get to you every time! 🙂

  11. I agree! Look at those horns!

  12. Mostly DARGH! But I know you’re not REALLY dissing redtails and Kestrels, are you? Harrumph! 😀

  13. You haven’t been “skunked” Ron… I consider this one a keeper. Anyone can take a straight portrait
shot, but can you find just one other image on the web like this one?? I consider it unique, and eye
catching, and it made me chuckle. This is what makes nature photography, challenging, fun, and often
satisfying. Every day I expect to see a beautiful shot, or series of images on your blog, and you
have yet to disappoint me. ;-)))

  14. Well, your shot certainly shows how the Horned Lark got its name. And it is dead sharp . . .
