Finally – Another Burrowing Owl

It’s been six months since I’ve photographed a Burrowing Owl but yesterday on Antelope Island my “owl drought” finally ended.

This bird was perched on greasewood near the road with the Great Salt Lake as background.  Its right foot was banded but thankfully that foot was hidden.  The setting’s a little busy so as you can see from my techs I set up for take-off (I probably should have been at ISO 500).

I was able to get three unclipped flight shots just after take-off but the other two were soft.  I always enjoy the lake as background and I like how the owl is almost completely separated from the greasewood that still contributes to the image as habitat.

I’ve been seeing Burrowing Owls on the island for several weeks now but for me they’ve been decidedly uncooperative.  It was nice to have a little change of luck.

  1. Beautiful flight shot Ron. Sadly I found parts to one when I was running the dogs the other day. Had definitely been eaten, only wings & feathers left. Found an entire BO last fall that had been hit by a car. I hope I quit finding dead ones & start seeing some live ones:-0

    • Deb, they seem to be particularly vulnerable to vehicle collisions. I know of at least one that was killed on the Antelope Island causeway.

  2. Thanks ,again for bailing me out! Would have hated to miss a single image of these wonderful little guys…they always make me laugh to smile…and I NEEDED that!

  3. It was VERY nice for you, and for us, that this burrowing owl had taken its co-operative pill. Magic to start my day.

  4. I’m so happy for you (and US) that you got to see your (our!) adorable little friends again!!!

  5. Excellent shots Ron, the eyes have it.
    Does Greasewood have a flower?

    !!!!!!!!!!!!! happy day.

  8. Sweet!! Love the angle the owl is at on this shot. The position of the twig in the background is “Picture Perfect” centered in the owl like it is. Very nice. These are tough little guys to get in flight. Very nice. Thx for sharing.

  9. Great in flight shot!
