Snow-hoppin’ Chukar

Chukars typically forage in small flocks and when they do one of them often sits on an elevated perch and serves as a sentry while the others are looking for food.    1/2500, f/8, ISO 500, 100-400 @ 400mm, natural light  This bird chose a pile of snow that had been pushed up high by a snow plow along the edge of a road.      1/3200, f/8, ISO 500, 100-400 @ 400mm, natural light When the rest of the flock wandered off it decided it was time to look for a safe way down from its lofty perch.    1/2500, f/8, ISO 500, 100-400 @ 400mm, natural light  When they do so they’re very deliberate about it.  This bird investigated several pathways down before settling on this direction.  It’s quite a ways down so “he” was pretty careful about it.      1/2500, f/8, ISO 500, 100-400 @ 400mm, natural light Most birds would at least open their wings to soften the landing.  Not Chukars.  I’ve often been impressed by how far they’re willing to free-fall without using their wings.  I sometimes refer to Chukars as “rock-hoppers” – guess I’ll have to add “snow-hoppers” to the list. Since I was using my 100-400mm zoom lens for this sequence I wish I’d had time to back off a bit on the focal length for the jump, but I didn’t.  Consequently I had to add some canvas for composition.  It’s harder to get them in mid-air, sharp and composed well than it looks. Short-eared Owl Perch-hunting

A couple of weeks ago I posted two shots of this Short-eared Owl perched on this frost-covered rabbitbrush.  In those images the bird was reacting to me which isn’t really a natural behavior.  A direct look toward the viewer from those strikingly colorful eyes is certainly riveting but more natural behaviors also appeal to me.    1/500, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 t c, natural light, not baited, set up or called in Short-eared Owls hunt primarily “on the wing” – they’re typically not “sit and wait” hunters like many other raptors.  But this bird noticed what was probably a vole at the base of the rabbitbrush and its reaction to it was obvious.  It stared intently down for some time which resulted in a natural pose that I like. An Interesting Observation About Falcon Behavior

I’ve noticed an apparent behavioral quirk in some of the falcon species I’ve photographed and it’s tweaked my curiosity a bit.  I’ve seen it most often in Prairie Falcons but that’s most likely because I get more opportunities with that species than I do any other of the large falcons.   More often than not the Prairie Falcon holds its wings up or out (or both) for a few moments before it takes off.  Sometimes the posture is maintained for quite a while.  This is one of the better shots I have of it.  Most of the photos to follow have reduced image quality but I include them to document the behavior.     This bird held the posture for so long that I filled my buffer twice before it actually took off.     Most often I’ve seen it prior to take-off from an elevated perch like this one but it also happens occasionally when they take off from the ground.     Another Prairie Falcon showing the posture.     I don’t see it nearly as often with the American Kestrel as I do with larger falcons.  Perhaps that has to do with the relative ease of take-off for this diminutive falcon.     I get few opportunities with Merlins but I’ve noticed it occasionally with this species also. I’m not sure if Peregrine Falcons do it.  Usually when I’ve been close enough to photograph peregrines they’ve been on prey on the ground and they may be less likely to show the behavior when taking off from a…

Too Cold For Meadowlarks?

I’m used to seeing Western Meadowlarks all winter long.  True, their numbers go down as some of them migrate south but there always seems to be a resident population of them here in northern Utah and I typically photograph them year-round.  Not so this winter.    1/3200, f/7.1, ISO 500 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light (techs were set for take-off) This is the last meadowlark I photographed, taken on 28 December, 2012 and it’s been weeks since I’ve even seen one.  Though they’re a permanent resident in my area we’re right on the border between their “permanent resident” and “breeding resident” ranges – see map if you’re interested. I suspect they’ve all vamoosed for warmer climes because of our recent extremes of cold and snow.  If that’s the case, this is one more species I’ll add to my list of birds whose return I’ll anticipate as harbingers of spring. Juvenile Burrowing Owl Parallaxing

Parallax is the effect where the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions.  When an observer moves, the apparent relative motion of several stationary objects against a background gives hints about their relative distance which the brain can interpret to provide absolute depth information. As you can imagine this can be very helpful to birds for flight and for judging prey position.  The movement required comes automatically during flight but it can also be provided while perched by exaggerated movements of the head in all three dimensions.  Tipping the head also provides cues by changing the relative position of the eyes to the object being viewed. Learning to interpret this information takes practice so many juvenile birds do just that, owls in particular. Techs for the following images – most were taken at 1/640 or 1/800, f/9, ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in.  All images presented in the order they were taken.    Several years ago I spent a lot of time over several weeks photographing a family of Burrowing Owls along the causeway to Antelope Island.  Their burrow was very close to the road and they became almost completely acclimated to traffic so I was able to observe and photograph many interesting behaviors of both juveniles and adults from my pickup. The Incredibly Long-legged Black-necked Stilt

The Black-necked Stilt is one of the more easily recognized birds in North America.   With its shiny black wings and back opposed by the whites of the breast and underparts and its long, bright red legs it is unlikely to be confused with any other species within its range.    1/1000, f/11, ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light But in my experience most observers are unfamiliar with the differences between males and females.  Though the sexes are similar it’s relatively easy to tell them apart when they’re in breeding plumage.  The back and scapulars of the male are a solid, shiny black while the female has a noticeable brown tone in those areas.  The legs of the female are also shorter than those of the male.       1/1250, f/8, ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light The iris of both sexes is red though it is more brightly colored in the male.  Here the pupil is dilated to a relatively large size so the colored iris doesn’t take up much of the eye.  I’ve found that in photos it can be difficult to get the eye color to show so it often appears solid black.       1/2000, f/6.3, ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light But perhaps the most unique feature of the Black-necked Stilt is those incredibly long, ruby-red legs.  Their legs are longer in proportion to their bodies than any other bird except flamingos, accounting for one of their common names – daddy longlegs.  Stilts have partially webbed feet…

Great Horned Owls In The Montana Wind

I’ve posted before about the Great Horned Owls on the family farm in nw Montana.  That farm is near Cut Bank, Montana which is famous (infamous) for its howling winds.    1/1000, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in So many of my images of those farm owls show the effects of the wind on the owls.  The wind was only moderate when I took this shot so about the only effect you can see from it is the leaning ear tufts (horns).   Even at this wind speed you can hear it whistling through the granary cutouts where these birds like to perch  When I’m shooting from a tripod instead of from my pickup it’s difficult to get sharp shots because of the effects of the wind on my long lens.      1/160, f/10, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in But when the wind really howls the birds seek refuge.  This owl liked to hunker down deep in this Poplar tree as an escape.  It was so deeply buried in the tree that I could only get fleeting glimpses of it when the wind would blow some of the branches and leaves in front of the bird to the side.  At times the wind would blow the ear tufts almost flat on its head.  This owl is leaning into the wind to keep from being blown off the perch.      1/500, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4…

Red-tailed Hawk – Intensity At Take-off

Raptors at take-off typically have a “focused” look about them – they’re all business.  But I thought the intensity of purpose of this Red-tailed Hawk was particularly evident.    1/3200, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in Red-tails are “perch-and-wait” hunters so when they take off after prey they already have their eye on it and their focus is seldom diverted as they swoop in for the kill.   This juvenile was hunting voles from an elevated rock perch on Antelope Island several months ago. Short-eared Owl Taking Off In Low Light

This male Short-eared Owl was taking off from the sagebrush plains of Montana’s Centennial Valley.    1/1600. f/5.6. ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in  I got three shots in the sequence that I liked well enough to keep.  At lift-off he was heading mostly in my direction.  I was shooting from my pickup and the vehicle didn’t intimidate him in the least.      1/2000. f/5.6. ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in  Almost immediately he began to veer off to my left…      1/1600. f/5.6. ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in and then gave me a side view as he flew off to hunt voles for his family (female and two chicks). I’ve never posted this sequence before because the very low light forced me to shoot at ISO 800 which is really pushing it for my Canon 7D so there’s some resulting noise in the images.  I don’t like to use noise reduction but I’ve applied it to the backgrounds only for this presentation. Like I said in my last post, every image has strengths and weaknesses and the low light I was dealing with (especially for flight shots) forced me into some compromises for these images.  They may not be perfect but I’m still happy to have them. How Important Is Direct Eye Contact?

I’m hoping to get some feedback from my viewers on this one. Almost from day one with my bird photography I’ve labored under the impression that good eye contact with my subject is vital, almost essential, for a strong image.  But that’s a premise I’m beginning to question to some degree. I don’t think there’s any question that a good look at the eye almost always makes for a stronger image.  Direct eye contact is often even better.  But no image is perfect – they all have strengths and weaknesses and I’m wondering if I sometimes put too much importance on eye contact over other desirable traits of an image. Below are three images of male Northern Harriers.  Each has strengths and weaknesses.  My previous impulse would have been to shun the last two shots because of a poor look at the eye, even though they have other strengths the first image does not.  Now I’m not so sure…    1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 500, 500 f/4, natural light, not baited, set up or called in In this photo the bird has an interesting wing position and it’s nicely separated from the horizon below.  And I have great eye contact but the bird is “only flying” and there’s nothing else interesting going on.  And besides, it could be said that looking at the photographer isn’t really a “natural behavior” anyway… Note:  If you’re wondering what the brown is at top right, the background is water, not sky, and the brown at top and bottom are land.  I could clone or…

Warm vs Cool Light – Minutes Matter

Color temperature (white balance) can make a big difference in photography and nature photography is certainly no exception.  I seldom manipulate white balance during processing and never do it if I’m confident that my camera has rendered the image to look like it did in the field.    1/000, f/7.1, ISO 640, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not set up or called in The natural colors of the Loggerhead Shrike are gray, black and white but those colors are affected by the temperature of the light.  I photographed this bird on November 26, 2012 at 7:56 am, very soon after the sun had come up over the Wasatch Mountains.  Notice the warm, golden tones on the grays and the whites of the bird, and on the perch.  They can even be seen in the almost black beak.       1/000, f/7.1, ISO 640, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not set up or called in Just 20 minutes later, at 8:16 am, I photographed this shrike on a different perch.  By then the sun was higher in the sky and the light was filtered through relatively thin clouds.  I think the difference in color tone of the two images is dramatic. Even though nature photographers often prefer warmer colors in their images I’m not suggesting that either warmer or cooler colors are necessarily “better” than the other.  I’m only saying that they can have a huge overall effect on the image.  And that mere minutes matter. Chukars Falling Through The Snow

Two days ago we had great fun with Chukars on Antelope Island.  The afternoon before had been relatively warm, melting the top layer of snow which then froze into a thin crust on top of the snow during the night.  Our timing was perfect as we found a large covey of Chukars flitting between sagebrush and rabbitbrush for cover just as the morning sun was beginning to soften the hard crust. As you view these photos, keep in mind that most of the sequences were shot in bursts of 8 frames per second.  The action was pretty fast.   When these birds were walking, the crust would support their weight but they just couldn’t resist the impulse to run.  And when they did…     the crust, which had only become soft in the last few minutes, would usually give way…     leaving a very surprised bird stuck in the snow.     The bird would then pull out of the snow.  This one almost looks like it’s looking around to see if any of its buddies saw its silly maneuver. Usually they seemed to know that they needed to walk instead of run, which they did for a few steps but then they nearly always tried to run again. It was hilarious to watch and it happened repeatedly.  This was one of those few times that I wish I’d been prepared to shoot video but I think the still shots still give a pretty good sense of what was happening.     Another…

Western Grebe Fish Delivery

Temperatures are finally warming a bit here in northern Utah but the world is outside is still monotonously white.   Yesterday morning I measured 22 1/2″ of snow on the north end of Antelope Island, indicating that our bleak and largely featureless landscape will remain the same for the foreseeable future. So this morning I needed a break and decided to post an image (taken this past June at Bear River MBR) that would remind me that spring is somewhere out there on the distant horizon.    1/3200, f/7.1, ISO 640, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light Western Grebes are devoted parents to their incessantly hungry and noisy chicks.  The male and female take turns with their parental duties – one will back brood the youngsters while the other delivers fish and then they alternate responsibilities.  Here the female (smaller than the male, with a shorter, thinner bill – thus sexual dimorphism) has caught a small fish and is delivering it to the male.  Usually the parent receiving the fish will give it to the chick, as happened here. As I’m sure is obvious, I’m very much looking forward to watching and photographing springtime bird activities once again.  It’s going to be a very long 2-3 months… Ron
